Engineer standards

EN 10088 is the main standard relating to "general purpose" stainless steel.
 

Part 1 of this standard contains composition and physical properties, while Part 3 is specific to the delivery conditions of stainless long products. 
 

At the world level, recently released ISO 15510 defines an even wider range of grades available.

Other standards apply to special categories or to special fields of application, e.g.:

  • EN 10095 : Heat-resisting stainless steels
  • EN 10272 : Stainless steels for pressure vessels (long products) 

     

The European standard  EN 10088 includes two designations:
 

A designation with symbols

According to EN 10027 standard " designation system for steels  ", the designation of stainless steels begins with a symbol : the letter " X " which designates steels containing at least one alloying element with a content equal to or higher than 5 %.
 

A designation with figures

It includes a series of 5 figures which begins with 1.4 ; the third figure refers to a specific family of grades and reflects the chemical composition. The last two figures are given arbitrarily.


1.40xx : Stainless steel with Ni % < 2,5 – without Mo, Nb & Ti ;
1.41xx : Stainless steel with Ni % < 2,5 – with Mo, without Nb & Ti ;
1.43xx : Stainless steel with Ni % ≥ 2,5 – without Mo, Nb & Ti ;
1.44xx : Stainless steel with Ni % ≥ 2,5 – with Mo, without Nb & Ti ;
1.45xx : Stainless steel with special additions;
1.46xx : Stainless heat-resisting steels -  Ni-alloys  


Examples:
1.4016 is a ferritic stainless steel containing 17 % Cr, without Ni
1.4301 is an austenitic stainless steel containing 18 % Cr and 8 % to 10.5 % Ni
1.4404 is an austenitic stainless steel containing 18 % Cr, 10% to 13% Ni and 2 % to 2.5 % Mo
